The Takasago Legend is believed to be one of the oldest ones in Japanese mythology. It is about an old couple, Joo (Husband) and Uba (Wife) known together as Jotomba. They are said to appear from the misty lake of Takasago. They are usually seen very happy, talking to each other with a pine tree in the background. Signifying, as they do, a couple living in perfect harmony until they grow old together, they have long been a symbol of the happiness of family life.
